Program Overview
The American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI™) course prepares participants to teach swimming and water safety courses for a variety of ages and skill levels. Participants learn how to use Red Cross course materials, conduct lessons, and evaluate swimmer progress across programs including Parent and Child Aquatics, Preschool Aquatics, Learn-to-Swim, adult swim courses, and water safety programs.
Candidates must be at least 16 years old by the last day of the course and successfully complete a pre-course skills session.
Required Skills
- Front Crawl: 25 yards
- Back Crawl: 25 yards
- Breaststroke: 25 yards
- Elementary Backstroke: 25 yards
- Sidestroke: 25 yards
- Butterfly: 15 yards
- Maintain position on the back for 1 minute in deep water using floating or sculling
- Tread water for 1 minute
Swimming strokes must be demonstrated consistent with American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Level 4 standards.
