Program Overview

Youth basketball at the Winona Family YMCA gives kids opportunities to learn the game, develop skills, and build confidence in a fun and supportive environment. Programs are available for a variety of ages and abilities, from introductory skill development to organized league play, with an emphasis on teamwork, sportsmanship, and positive competition.

Happy Hoops (Ages 3-6)

Happy Hoops introduces preschoolers and kindergarteners to the basic skills and vocabulary of basketball through age-appropriate activities and equipment. Participants build confidence while learning about teamwork, sharing, sportsmanship, and having fun being active with others.

Developmental League (Grades 1-4)

The YMCA Developmental Basketball Leagues help young players build fundamental skills while experiencing organized team play and positive competition. Practices focus on skill development, teamwork, and confidence before introducing games with coaches and officials.

League options are available for 1st–2nd grade and 3rd–4th grade players. The 1st–2nd grade league uses co-ed teams, while separate boys and girls leagues are offered for 3rd–4th grade.

Pacers Girls Basketball (Grades 5-8)

The YMCA Pacers Girls Basketball Program is a developmental program with a competitive component designed to help players build skills, confidence, and character while preparing for future levels of play. Practices emphasize teamwork, fundamentals, and decision-making in a supportive and inclusive environment.

Pacers is offered as separate grade-level programs for 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade, with practice days and times varying by level.

Off-Season Basketball Skills Camp gives players additional opportunities to develop their individual basketball skills and prepare for the upcoming season. Participants work with coaches on shooting form, ball handling, fundamental skills, and team drills.

All Abilities Basketball provides an inclusive environment where participants of varying physical, social, and cognitive abilities can develop basketball skills while building confidence, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Beginners and experienced players are welcome, with additional staff and volunteers available to support participants who may benefit from more individualized assistance.
